They reinforce the six gantry cranes already in operation and will significantly improve the performance of the Pointe-Noire Port Authority and contribute to meeting the needs of international shipowners and trading partners.
Manufactured by ZPMC, these two electric gantry cranes each have a lifting capacity of at least 100 tons. They can handle the most modern ships carrying up to 16,000 TEU containers.
Financed by Congo Terminal to the tune of 11.3 billion CFA francs (17 million euros), these two gantry cranes ordered in 2021 allow Congo Terminal to expand its equipment fleet. The company now has 8 STS quay gantries, 20 RTG yard gantries, 4 Gottwald mobile cranes, 58 port tractors and 9 reach stackers.
"This investment demonstrates our desire to support the development of our local infrastructure by accompanying the performance of the autonomous port of Pointe-Noire. The arrival of these new gantry cranes completes our offer with state-of-the-art technologies, in line with the vision of the State authorities to make this port the main gateway to the Congo Basin and the leading transshipment platform in Central Africa," said Séraphin BHALAT, General Manager of the Autonomous Port of Pointe-Noire.
"Thanks to this new equipment, Congo Terminal will increase its productivity and its capacity to receive large vessels. As these STS gantries are electric, they will also enable us to reduce our environmental footprint and thus reinforce our ongoing Green Terminal approach", says Sandrine WAMY, Congo Terminal's Operations Manager.
In 2022, the company handled for the second consecutive year more than 1,000,000 TEU against 190,000 at the beginning of the concession in 2009. Congo Terminal expects the delivery of six new RTG gantry cranes during 2023. It employs more than 900 permanent staff and pursues a bold CSR/sponsorship policy in favor of youth, environmental protection and education.
